Seven questions, and what a good answer to each sounds like.
Most people compare electricians on price alone because they have no other axis to compare on. These seven questions give you one, and they take about four minutes on the phone.
For panel upgrades, service work, rewires, generators and EV chargers, permits apply in Massachusetts. Ask whether the quote includes filing it and meeting the inspector. A quote that excludes the permit isn't cheaper — it's incomplete.
There is a large difference. A flat price is a number you'll pay. An estimate is a number you'll exceed. Ask which one you're holding, and ask what specifically would change it.
The right answer is: we stop, show you, and re-quote before continuing. The wrong answer is silence followed by an invoice.
Some companies quote with one person and dispatch another. It's not inherently a problem, but you should know before the day rather than at the door.
Listen for testing language — isolating circuits, checking under load, tracing runs. Be wary of anyone who diagnoses over the phone with certainty and arrives with a part already chosen.
Ask whether the after-hours line reaches a dispatcher or an answering service, and whether they can actually roll a truck at 2am. Those are different capabilities and both get advertised the same way.
A walkthrough at the end — what the fault was, what was done, what to watch — is a reasonable expectation. If a company treats that as an imposition, it tells you how the rest of the relationship will go.
Every one of these questions is really asking the same thing: does this company explain itself before it has to? OSB works across every city in Massachusetts, and the answers above are the ones we hold ourselves to. Call (833) 652-8933 and test them.
