Ten Signs Your House Needs Rewiring

When repeated repairs stop being repairs and start being a symptom.

Rewiring is a large decision and it should not be made on a hunch. But there's a point at which repeated small repairs stop being repairs and start being evidence. These are the signs that tend to appear together.

The ten signs

One sign is a repair. Four is a project.

Any single item on that list has a targeted fix. What indicates a rewire is the cluster: when the wiring is original, the panel is original, and the house has been extended twice since. At that point money spent on individual repairs is money spent twice.

Partial rewires are legitimate

It isn't all or nothing. Rewiring the kitchen, bathrooms and second floor while leaving sound circuits alone is common, sensible, and dramatically cheaper. A good assessment tells you which circuits are actually a problem rather than assuming all of them are.

Get an assessment first

Before any quote, have someone open the panel, check the attic and basement, and test a sample of circuits. Scope drives price on a rewire more than anything else, and scope can only be established by looking.
