Electrical Panel Upgrade Cost in Massachusetts: What Drives the Price in 2026

Panel upgrade quotes in Massachusetts vary more than almost any other electrical job, and homeowners usually can't tell why one number is double another. Almost always, the difference isn't the panel. It's everything around it.

What you're actually buying

A service upgrade is four separate pieces of work bundled into one price: the new load centre and breakers, the service entrance conductors and meter socket, the grounding electrode system, and the coordination with the utility and the local inspector. A quote that looks cheap has usually left one of those out.

The five things that move the price

• Mast and drop condition. If the service mast is short, rotted or badly located, it gets replaced. That's often the single biggest line item after the panel itself.
• Meter location. A meter on the same wall as the panel is simple. A meter on the far side of the house means a new service run.
• Grounding. Older Massachusetts homes were grounded to a water pipe that has since been partly replaced with plastic. New ground rods and bonding are frequently required.
• Circuit count. Every existing circuit has to land in the new panel. Old, short, brittle conductors need extensions and junction boxes.
• Overhead versus underground. Underground services cost more to modify because the work involves the utility's lateral and often a trench.

When you don't need a full upgrade

Plenty of homeowners are quoted a service upgrade when what they actually need is space. If your 200 amp service is fine but the panel is physically full, a sub-panel adds capacity for a fraction of the cost. Similarly, if you're adding an EV charger and the load calculation is borderline, a load-management device can be far cheaper than a new service.

Signs you genuinely should upgrade

• You still have a fuse box or a 60 amp service
• Your panel is a brand that insurers refuse to write over
• Lights dim across the whole house when a large motor starts
• You're adding an EV charger, heat pump or induction range and the load calculation fails
• There is visible rust, scorching or heat damage inside the panel

Getting a quote you can trust

Ask three questions of any quote: does it include the permit, does it include the utility coordination, and does it include grounding upgrades if the inspector requires them. If the answer to any of those is no, the number in front of you isn't the final number.
