Almost every EV owner starts on the cord that came in the boot, plugged into a wall outlet, and almost every one of them upgrades within a year. Here's what to decide before you book the install.

Level 1 versus Level 2

Level 1 is a standard 120V outlet. It adds roughly three to five miles of range per hour, which is fine if you drive twenty miles a day and never forget to plug in. Level 2 runs on 240V and adds roughly twenty to forty miles per hour, which means the car is full every morning regardless of what you did yesterday.

The load calculation decides everything

Before anyone quotes you, someone should calculate whether your service can carry the charger alongside everything else in the house. This is not a formality. A 200 amp service in a home without electric heat usually has plenty of headroom. A 100 amp service with an electric range and a heat pump often doesn't.

Where capacity is short, you have three options rather than one: upgrade the service, install a load-management device that throttles the charger when the house is busy, or install at a lower amperage. The second is frequently the cheapest good answer and is often skipped by installers who'd rather sell a panel.

Hardwired or plug-in?

• Hardwired supports higher amperage (up to 48A on most units), is required outdoors in many jurisdictions, and looks tidier.
• NEMA 14-50 outlet lets you unplug and take the charger with you, and is easier to replace if the unit fails. It caps out at 40A continuous.
• For a home you intend to stay in, hardwired is usually the better call. For a rental or a house you'll sell soon, the outlet has the edge.

What the install day looks like

A straightforward garage install next to the panel is a few hours. A detached garage needing a trench, or a run across the house to the far wall, is a full day. If the panel needs upgrading first, expect two days and a utility appointment.

Permits and rebates

EV charger installations are permitted work in Massachusetts. That matters beyond compliance: rebate programmes generally require the closed permit and a receipt from the installer. Keep both.
